If You Think the National GOP Has it Bad...

...then take a look at the state of the Massachusetts Republican Party. Following a loss of three State House seats, and the re-election of Massachusetts' entire congressional delegation, here is how the political state of Massachusetts looks:

Governor: Democrat
Lieutenant Governor: Democrat
Attorney General: Democrat
State Treasurer: Democrat
Secretary of State: Democrat
U.S. Senate: 2 Democrats
10-seat Congressional Delegation: 10 Democrats
State House: 144 Democrats, 16 Republicans
State Senate: 35 Democrats, 5 Republicans

That is so bad, it is almost beyond comprehension. I realize Massachusetts is Massachusetts, but in no state is one party so marginalized. In Wyoming, the governor is a Democrat. In Alaska, the State Senate is controlled by Democrats. Idaho just elected a Democratic congressman. Even in Texas, Democrats have a presence in the legislature. Conversely, the Republican Party in Massachusetts is irrelevant. Dead. There was a time when the GOP at least held the governorship for almost 20 years straight. No more.

Mitt Romney, as well as the party operatives there did an incredible job. If I was an ambitious young Republican, I would head to Boston to begin rebuilding the state party. You can only go up from this mess.

I'd say this is an excellent opportunty for a GOP outsider to take the governoship from Deval Patrick. The easiests thing is to run as an outsider and frankly, the Mass GOP is so oustide the power structure of Beacon Hill they might as well be in Maine.

I think Deval could be beaten, but it would be very hard given (1) his enormous popularity with the activist liberal base in the state; and (2) the GOP's lack, not only of a bench, but of even a basic infrastructure. You might think then that the only way to win would be through a zillionaire who spends freely, but that's what the GOP had in 2006 in Kerry Healey, and she lost by around 20 points.

The GOP in the state is basically nonexistent, and in this country, no matter what state you are in, you should never be this bad.
