Resist the Urge, Barack

After witnessing the spectacle that was the Republican National Convention tonight, I have one message for Senator Obama:

Resist the urge, Senator.

Resist the urge to respond in kind to all of the attacks tonight, many of them unfair, and a great many of them incredibly shrill, nasty, and childish. As ridiculous as these attacks were, and as unqualified as Sarah Palin is, or as nakedly hypocritical as Rudy Giuliani is, or as incredibly phony as Mitt Romney is, no good can come of engaging what was said tonight.

The best thing you can do, Senator, is to ignore Palin and the others, and keep focused laser-like on your opponent, John McCain. Stay above the fray, don't get into a pissing contest over social wedge issues, and who loves rural America more, as that is the exact bait the GOP set for you tonight.

The urge is there, I know it, as demonstrated by my own posts made immediately following Palin's shocking selection. If the Republicans have decided to run a slash-and-burn campaign -- and all indications are from tonight that they have -- it will likely only end up hurting them in this national anti-GOP environment. The best thing you can do is ignore it all, and continue what you've been doing. As evidenced by the polls, it is the path to victory.

From what I've read in the NY Times today, this is precisely what Obama is doing.

"Never interrupt your enemy while he is making a mistake", I believe the saying goes. From what I've been reading, Obama has been campaigning in swing states in small venues, generally keeping quiet and not making any noise. Why should he, when his opponents are destroying themselves?

Mark - you have to admit that now limousine liberals who laugh at Christians when they get offended as someone makes fun of christianity are getting a taste for that type of displeasure when your messiah is called out on his shortcomings.

Obama is going to win. It is a testament to his weakness that it might be this close when the GOP brand is so weak and the media is so firmly attached to his jock.
